Mom Burnout Statistics

The most-quoted figures on maternal burnout, sorted by what each one actually measures: federal surveillance data, national time use, and the brand surveys everyone cites as fact.

Most of these numbers do not mean what they are used to mean

Search for statistics about maternal burnout and one figure dominates: 93% of mothers are burned out. It appears in news coverage, in marketing decks and in the opening line of a great many articles, almost always stated as a fact about mothers in general.

It is not that. It comes from an opt-in survey run by an app for mothers. The right reading is "93% of the 4,000 mothers who chose to answer this survey", which is a genuinely interesting finding and a different claim.

We publish that figure below, because it is real and it is worth knowing. But we publish it next to the federal surveillance data, labelled, so you can see which numbers are reliable and which are not. If you are writing about this, the ranking in the comparison table is the part to use.

What the government data says

The strongest US figure on maternal mental health comes from the CDC's Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System. It is a surveillance programme, not a marketing survey, and it is designed to be representative of women who have recently given birth.

About one in eight. That is the number to use when you need a defensible prevalence figure. It is far lower than the survey headlines, and that is why the headlines get repeated more often.

It also hides an enormous amount of variation.

A new mother in Mississippi was 2.4 times as likely to report postpartum depressive symptoms as one in Illinois (23.5% against 9.7%). Whatever is driving maternal depression, it is not spread evenly, and the national average of 13.2% tells you little about any particular state.

Screening is now widespread: 87.4% of women were asked about depression at a postpartum visit in 2018, and 79.1% at a prenatal one. That leaves 12.6% who were never asked after giving birth, roughly one in eight, about the same share who had symptoms.

What the time-use data says

Burnout is hard to measure and hours are not. The American Time Use Survey asks a national sample to account for a full day, minute by minute, which makes it the one source here that measures behaviour rather than self-description.

In households with a child under six, women did 2.8 hours a day of primary childcare against men's 1.7, a gap of 66 minutes. That is on top of the housework, and before any paid work. Across all households, the ratio is exactly two to one.

We looked at what that does to the rest of the day in The Self-Care Time Gap: women end up with 49 fewer minutes of leisure a day than men, while doing more total work once the unpaid kind is counted.

What the survey data says, with the caveat attached

The 2026 Motherhood Index, run by Peanut with Nuna, surveyed more than 4,000 mothers across the US and UK and analysed more than 500,000 posts on Peanut's own platform. It is one of the largest recent collections of mothers' own accounts, and it is an opt-in sample. Both things are true.

70% reported fewer than five hours of unbroken sleep, and 36% fewer than four. Whatever the sampling, sleep loss at that level is a health problem, not a matter of routine.

That last one is the most useful finding in the index, because it links two things rather than reporting one: mothers carrying a significantly larger share of the domestic work were 33% more likely to report burnout. It suggests a cause, and it agrees with what the federal time-use data shows using a completely different method.

The global picture

42% of women worldwide reported worry the previous day and 34% reported physical pain for much of it. This measures women rather than mothers, across 144 countries, so it is context for the numbers above rather than evidence about mothers. It is also the best-sampled emotional-health data that exists, and it has not improved since the index began.

One number to be careful with

Burnout language in mothers' posts rose 107% year on year, and nervous-system language rose 625%. It is a large rise, and it is routinely reported as evidence that burnout is rising. It isn't evidence of that. It shows the vocabulary spreading, which can happen because more mothers are struggling, or because the words became common. In 2025 and 2026, "nervous system regulation" went mainstream on TikTok and Instagram. Both explanations fit.

The comparison

Every figure above, sorted by how reliable it is rather than by how often it gets quoted. The two orders are almost reversed.

Why we publish this

Meadow makes a habit app. It is for anyone, and a lot of the people who use it are women, plenty of them mothers, so we are not a neutral party and you should take that into account. We built this page because we kept finding the same four or five numbers repeated across dozens of articles with their qualifications stripped off, and because the qualifications matter: the biggest number on this page comes from the weakest source, and the best-designed source is rarely quoted.

If you take one figure from here, take 13.2%. If you take two, take the 66-minute childcare gap as well, because it measures a cause rather than a symptom.

How we did this
  1. This report aggregates published figures rather than producing new ones, so its job is to keep the sources separate and label what each can support.
  2. Sources are ranked by design, not by how quotable they are. Public-health surveillance (CDC PRAMS) and national random-sample surveys (BLS American Time Use Survey) are treated as strong evidence about the population. Opt-in surveys, however large, are treated as descriptions of the people who answered them.
  3. Every figure is transcribed from the primary publication, not from a secondary aggregator. Where the primary source could not be reached and checked, the figure was left out, including several that circulate widely.
  4. Where a figure is a ratio or a difference, the arithmetic is stated on the stat itself.
  5. Nothing here is modelled or adjusted. Percentages are reproduced as their publishers reported them.

Where each figure comes from

13.2% - of new mothers had postpartum depressive symptoms
CDC Vital Signs analysis of Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) data. This is the strongest US figure available on maternal mental health because it comes from public-health surveillance rather than an opt-in survey. It still covers only 31 PRAMS sites, not all 50 states, and 2018 is the most recent year published in this Vital Signs series.

Measures how mothers on one platform talk, not how many are burned out. A rise in the language can reflect the vocabulary spreading as easily as the condition spreading.

Limits of this data

  • The 93% burnout figure is not a prevalence estimate. It comes from an opt-in survey run by an app for mothers, so its respondents chose to take part and are not a random sample of mothers. It is a good description of the mothers who answered and a poor description of mothers in general, and the same applies to every other Motherhood Index figure on this page.
  • "Burnout" has no agreed clinical definition for parents. The ICD-11 entry describes an occupational phenomenon, so a survey asking mothers whether they feel burned out is measuring self-description, not diagnosis.
  • The CDC figure is the strongest here and is still limited: 31 PRAMS sites rather than all states, and 2018 is the most recent year published in that Vital Signs series. It measures depressive symptoms after a recent live birth, which is a narrower thing than maternal burnout.
  • The American Time Use Survey reports by sex and household composition, not by parental role. "Women in households with children under 6" is not identical to "mothers", and the survey records men and women only.
  • The Hologic index measures women worldwide, not mothers, and not Americans. It is context here, not evidence about mothers.
  • Language-growth figures measure how people talk on one platform. More people using a word does not mean more people have the condition, and a 625% rise in "nervous system" language is at least partly a wellness trend becoming popular.
  • Almost none of these sources measure the same population, the same year or the same concept. They should not be added together, and a percentage from one cannot be compared with a percentage from another.
