Sleep Statistics: the Gap Is Quality, Not Quantity
American women and men sleep almost exactly the same number of hours. Women are 1.5× as likely to have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Federal survey data.

The gap is in difficulty, not duration
The standard line is that women are more sleep-deprived than men. The federal data does not support that. Women and men sleep about the same amount. What differs is how hard the sleep is to get.
Nearly a third of American adults sleep less than the recommended seven hours. Split that by sex and the two groups look almost the same.
30.6% of men and 30.4% of women: a difference of 0.2 percentage points, well inside the survey's own margin of error. On duration, there is no gap to report.
The difference shows up somewhere else, in how easily people fall asleep and stay asleep.
The duration is the same. The difficulty is not. 18.5% of women had trouble falling asleep most days or every day, against 12.2% of men. That is about 1.5 times as likely, a gap of 6.3 points. For staying asleep it is 21.4% against 14.6%, a gap of 6.8 points.

This matters for the advice people are given. "Get more sleep" is advice about duration, and duration is not where women are behind. Not being able to fall asleep, or waking in the night, is a different problem from going to bed late, and the same advice does not fix it.
Which ages are worst affected
Short sleep is not worst among the young, which is where it is usually assumed to be. It peaks between 35 and 64, the years when people are most likely to have children at home, parents who need care and a demanding job at the same time.

Where short sleep is most common
30% in Vermont, 46% in Hawaii: a 16-point spread across US states. A spread that large suggests sleep is not only a matter of personal habits.
Why you will see two different national sleep figures
If you look this up yourself you will hit an apparent contradiction. The National Health Interview Survey says 30.5% of adults get under seven hours. The American Time Use Survey says the average American spends 9.03 hours a day sleeping: women 9.13, men 8.93. The two surveys are not measuring the same thing.
NHIS asks how many hours you usually sleep in twenty-four. ATUS asks you to account for one specific day, and averages across all seven days of the week, so it catches naps, weekend lie-ins and time in bed not actually asleep. Both are accurate measurements of different questions. Quoting them side by side, as several widely-shared articles do, produces a claim neither survey makes.

Why we publish this
Meadow is a habit app, and sleep is the habit people most often ask us about. We went looking for the size of the sleep gap between women and men. The gap people describe, in hours slept, is not there. A larger one, in how hard the sleep is to get, is.
It also changes what is worth building. A nudge to go to bed earlier is aimed at a problem women do not disproportionately have. The part worth helping with is falling asleep and staying asleep. We looked at the time side of the same question in The Self-Care Time Gap.

How we did this
- Duration and difficulty figures come from NCHS Data Brief 559, based on the 2024 National Health Interview Survey, a large, nationally representative household survey. Short sleep is defined as less than 7 hours in a 24-hour period, the recommended minimum for adults.
- State figures come from CDC FastStats, drawing on the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. BRFSS and NHIS are different surveys with different methods, so the state range is not directly comparable with the national NHIS figure and is presented separately.
- Time-use figures come from the American Time Use Survey and measure something different again. See the note on why the two federal numbers disagree.
- Ratios and percentage-point gaps are derived from the published percentages, and the arithmetic is stated on each stat.
- Nothing here is modelled or adjusted. Percentages are reproduced as NCHS and CDC published them.
Where each figure comes from
- 0.2 points - the entire gap between men and women on sleep duration
- The difference between the men’s and women’s short-sleep percentages. NHIS estimates carry sampling error, and a gap this small is well inside it. The honest description is that there is no meaningful difference in duration, not that men sleep slightly less.
- 1.5× - as likely as men to struggle to fall asleep, for women
- The women’s percentage divided by the men’s (18.5 ÷ 12.2), a gap of 6.3 percentage points.
- 9.03 vs 7 - hours of sleep: what two federal surveys each measure
- Both are correct and they measure different things. NHIS asks how many hours a person usually sleeps in 24 hours. ATUS records time spent in the sleeping activity on one diary day, averaged across all seven days of the week, so it includes naps, weekend lie-ins and time in bed not asleep. The two cannot be quoted together as though they were the same measure.
Limits of this data
- All of these figures are self-reported. People are poor estimators of how long they slept, and reported sleep is generally longer than measured sleep, so the true share of adults under 7 hours may be higher than 30.5%.
- The 0.2-point difference between men and women on short sleep is smaller than the survey’s sampling error. It should be read as "no meaningful difference", not as men sleeping slightly less.
- "Trouble falling asleep" and "trouble staying asleep" are self-described difficulties, not diagnoses. Women are also more likely than men to report symptoms in health surveys generally, which may account for part of the gap, though not obviously all of it.
- NHIS, BRFSS and ATUS measure sleep in three different ways and their numbers should never be combined into a single claim.
- These are cross-sectional snapshots. They show that women report more difficulty sleeping; they cannot say why, and nothing here identifies a cause.
- The survey records men and women only, and offers no data on nonbinary or transgender respondents.
